The Nature's Discovery Class has a lot of different activities to help develop many different skills as we learn about plants and our environment. We will be making our own journals to include a botany Illustration guide, herbarium of the plants we learn, and a soil journal as we survey our local habitats. These journals will have critical information in them that they will be able to use there entire lives as they grow and learn more about plants and there local environments.
We will be spending a session ever week learning about different botany terms and what they mean. While this is a very intensive and in-depth study, for the kids we will be doing very basic simple terms. Like the different between simple and compound, opposite or alternate, and basic parts of a plant. The idea for this is to build a good foundation for additional learning and also how to identify flower into families.
We will also be going out and identifying plants and collecting plant samples. We will be making our own herbarium which can be add onto and expanded on even after the class is over. They will learn how to illustrate plants, describe plants, and preserve plants for their herbarium journal. First half of the day is classroom learning outside while the other half is field work putting to use what we have just learned.
This class is designed for the family and ages 7 and up. A lot of extra information is provided so the parents can go home and reinforce what was taught and add onto as well. ll build on what we learn the pervious week.
